10TB, 12TB, 16TB, 20TB..32TB HELIUM FILLED HDD

Post by dhirota »

Because of some emphasis on cloud storage, probably many people are not tracking faster, larger local storage to improve productivity. I decided to start another thread which will attempt to show how increasing sized file information can be stored locally.

This was the previous thread that might also be of interest:

This is interesting that the individual Seagate 16TB HDD rated I/O speed is 261 MB/sec.

Good info Dennis.

It might be worth checking the below article, the HDD manufacturers are quietly changing over to SMR (shingle magnetic recording) on some drives. SMR has very very slow write speeds.

Iain

I was surprised by the use of SMR HDD by WD in the small sizes. If I need 2TB, 4TB, 6TB HDD, all less than 5 years of operation on each drive, I have probably at least 60 total HDD.

Here are some simple descriptions between CMR-PMR vs SMR from a well known firm, Synology, to the LSF.

LESSON LEARNED: In storage, reliability and speed are generally important, and timing of purchase may affect cost. Just because a technology appears to accomplish the same function does not mean it has the same reliability.

What you are probably seeing in the SMR HDD technology is similar to EVO and QVO in SSD technology.

Just in case you are looking for 80TB 3.5 inch spinning HDD storage in the future. The Seagate CMR 16TB SAS drives we purchased 4 months ago are working very nicely giving us raid 6 and 96,000 MB/87TB (more if your want to risk raid 5) servers.
