Your perfect "end-user" software
Hello fellow laser scanners,
Question: what features would your perfect client side program have? What software would help you sell more laser scanning services? Who has done a laser scan job for a client that was never really used, or not used to close to it's full potential because of software/network/hardware issues with your client?
This is for your architect, engineers, and owners to work with your (already registered, filtered, colored) data.
I'll start
-ability to serve remotely via internet/network(ala Jetstream?). Particularly being able to host via amazon web service or similar. Many clients cannot or will not free up 100's of GB's on their network.
-scanner view integration (ala LFM). Click a point in scanner view (bubble view, realview, truview, etc) and view the area in 3d.
-ability to fly through the whole point cloud/cad model combo (similar to Euclideon)
-ability to seamlessly connect and send points and models back and forth from and to common CAD programs.
-less than $2,000 for client side (right...) and able to run on a 5 year old laptop (right...)
What else?

Tough question. I think you would struggle to get clients to pay money for it.

Re: Your perfect "end-user" software
how about just a version of revit that isnt blotware or a VR cloud view that doesnt cost 30k+
however you might just solve all those issues with pointfuse if it had a bit more exportability.

What do you want to export to?hypsometric wrote:however you might just solve all those issues with pointfuse if it had a bit more exportability.
Pointfuse converts point data to vector models which you can then export to DAE (COLLADA), DXF, IFC or OBJ (Wavefront) format files. You can do that in individual steps, or in batch. Furthermore, exports to DAE or OBJ can include a texture: realistic RGB, intensity, orthogonal distance, or density.
You can also export 2D plans/sections, and elevations to DXF.

You actually can use all theses features using Geoverse (Euclideon).
1. It is possible to directly put datasets (compressed without loss) on a server (Amazon WS for exemple) and have many client side copies of Geoverse that will stream this data (no copy paste). This is what we do with our clients and our production pipeline. You can even secure the connexion to datasets.
2. The scanner view can be made via hyperlink within Geoverse
3. You already know the power of the engine
4. You can use the included CAD Connect plugin that allows a direct link with AutoCAD when drawing 3D polylines.
5. It runs on a 5 years old laptop...
I hope I could answer your questions,
Feel free to contact me directly if you need more informations
Best regards

Under $2,000 ?
Rhino 3D - $995 (compatible with dozens of CAD packages)
plus Veesus Arena4D for Rhino - $799 (comes with the XStream Engine built in )
Enough money left over to add a 3D Connexion Mouse
Regards,
Mike.

Re: Your perfect "end-user" software
Hi Guys,
I have this same question about now and thought it better to bump this thread in lieu of starting another one to ask the same thing.
I have been using Autodesk Recap as it is free and does everything you need for the end user. But their recent changes across the board have me very disillusioned with Autodesk in general and am now looking to change workflows and software. Being caught out by their latest move of forcing you to update Recap or not use it at all is the final straw for me.
So what other Recap-esque programs are out there that an end user can install and work with easily to view and interrogate their scan data?

I assume you require something free then?
ReCap's update requirement is only for the free/unlicensed version. ReCap Pro has no such requirement, and is now included with all industry collections or 300usd / yr standalone.

Re: Your perfect "end-user" software
Free would be ideal.
I am aware of this, but there are a host of other issues with forced updates that are now being implemented with the free version. Not least of which is not all people have free reign to update as required and that could cause issues with workflows for most of my clients. I am always on the lookout to make sure i can get my clients using point cloud data as easily and cheaply as possible and recap is starting to move away from being that software so i want to make sure i know of alternatives. Add to that not everyone is jumping on board with the collections, and recap is looking less attractive all the time.
The requirement is that you now HAVE to update after a certain time or you get locked out of the software. For a lot of people this wouldn't be a major issue. As Ryan noted if you have recap PRO you aren't forced to update. But for 99.99% of people, they don't need the pro version. So why pay for it solely not to be locked out of the software every month or so?
