Hello, I would like to introduce to you the Mephisto 3D scanners, to some in the 3d scanning industry and some newcomers they are already well known. A strong part of the mephisto scanner, is its speed and motion compensation module, which makes it one of the best 3D scanners for humans to date, while costing much much less than other high end systems.
The Mephisto is a highly flexible and intuitive structured light 3D scanning system. Achieve fast, accurate, high quality scanning results with a minimum of processing time and user interaction. Suitable for small and large area scanning of animated as well as static objects. Applications include:
* 3D scanning for medical research
* 3D scanning for automotive, aviation industries
* 3D scanning for reverse engineering and moulding
* 3D scanning for architecture and heritage
*3D scanning for heritage conservation
* 3D capture of small objects for model making and jewelry
The Mephisto scanning engine has a wide choice of options and capabilities which enable it to cope with the most complex scanning objects and situations. It is possible to use high quality robust machine vision cameras for fast high resolution scanning, or expand the scanning range with a Canon DSLR for higher resolution and a higher dynamic range.
The unique ultra fast algorithm computes a range image and triangulates the mesh at near real time speed. Simple and user friendly interface with project based software workflow means a shallow learning curve. The Mephisto 3D scanner is based on high quality consumer and reliable machine vision components. This gives the advantage in maintaining low costs, easy maintenance and interchange ability, resulting in low offline time.
There are momentarily several systems to choose from:
Mephisto Extreme, Mephisto complete, Mephisto micro (extreme detail for small parts), Mephisto dual, and Mephisto Body scanner. The body scanner can capture entire persons in a winck.
Some modules to choose from: Turntable, Deep Scan (more detail for parts), Motion Compensarion algorithms.
The Mephisto Extreme is the flagship 3D scanner, with Deep Scan, turntable mode, HDTV (1920 x1080) resolution machine vision camera with large, high quality Kodak CCD sensor , high quality Nikon mount lens with aspheric optics, high contrast ratio high resolution projector. Mephisto Extreme produces unparalleled quality results, compatible with highest range competition scanners, while remaining affordable and extremely flexible solution. Toghether with motion compensation routines it is an unparalleled scanner for humans.

Re: Mephisto 3D scanners
Oddly commercial post but with no apparent contact info or website link. Plus I'd sure like to see some results and examples of these claims. Where/how can we learn more?

I will agree about the commercial post a bit strange not to link (nothing wrong there it's in the right area) Here is a link to the website for the scanners.

A friend has just bought one of these so I hope to give a bit of first hand feed back.

Re: Mephisto 3D scanners
I used a mephisto scanner on some very close range work a few years ago, it was a little fiddly to get up and running but the results were pretty good. It used a structured light system with a projector and a HD digital video camera. One thing I do remember is regular "calibration" with a checkerboard. We were in an outside environment though and I believe it is used mostly inside for small objects or human face scanning. I seem to remember it being used on Tom Cruise for a film that was being made at the time... not sure which one.
These guys used to have them available for hire and or purchase, not sure if they still do but might be worth enquiring if you are interested. http://www.inition.co.uk/
I should also mention that from my experiences I would recommend an arm scanner or tracker over this system as it makes the registration process a lot faster and easier... the mephisto scanner we used collected data across very small regions and we had to register them together in Geomagic. An arm or tracker type scanner does not usually require manual registration of multiple scans... especially for small objects.
Some pictures of the results and it in action are here...

Re: Mephisto 3D scanners
Hi guys,
Thank you for forwarding the mephisto details to the forum.
I would like to add that the Mephisto used in this shot is the complete version which has linited resolution, with the xtreme you can make high res scans upto 15-50 Mu. With a scan size of about 1-2 mtrs you can scan quite large objects. Fe to scan a full body with our bodyscanner based on the Extreme version we use 4 scans for a full body. Which come in Rapidform ( included ) prealigned so just finealigned in automatic mode neccesary within normal circumstances.
Just to kee you up to date, we just started a twitter account under "4ddynamics"
Feel free to twit ? us for advice

Re: Mephisto 3D scanners
Hello guys, i just added the links. I made the above post in a bit of a hurry and forgot to edit it. There is a lot of information out there on the mephisto system. Users in the Benelux area can contact Geoscan 3D Media at http://www.geoscan3d.nl for a demo. Also you can check out youtube, especially the video from inition.
I would recommend this scanner if you are looking for a studio human scanner, for heritage objects or art. You can go far with the Extreme in terms of accuracy but to get the most you indeed will have a very small scan window (mephisto micro). So for reverse engineering machine parts no, but heritage definitely yes.
