Colin we had an istar for a week or so but we had a real problem with the number of images it could do, we do a lot on site in a short time and found the istar could not cope. We are planning on doing another video once all the deck are done (I will post it here).

Thanks Rob, looking forward to that.
What was the limiting factor with the images...? Battery life issues?
I find the HDR feature fine and the ISO can reach 3000+ far more than I ever need.
For us it's the unit size and one touch use esp. with the iPhone.

Colin
Battery life was a big problem, we needed to be able to take photos all day and it just wasn't up to it. I think they are close to having a good product but was not ready for when we needed it (deadlines wait for no one). The size and ease of use are definitely good point but to be fair the Spheron is not difficult to use. In reality a scanning unit with built in HDR camera that takes a pic from the came center is what we really want.

Hi Rob,

would the Z+F Imager5010C be an option for you then? It takes scans and HDR images with one click...
If you would like more information or some demo data, please let me know.

Best wishes,

Chris

Hi Chris

We will definitely be looking at the 5010c when it comes time to upgrade out scanner (unfortunately it was not available a months ago when we started the HMS Victory job). For us the combination of the lighting unit and the incredible images from the Spheron made it the best option available, to back up Peters original post even working in the dark the camera preforms very well.

Hi Robin,

Fantastic project! How did you find the work flow to get the spheron images onto the point cloud? Is it very laborious or not? Would love to see some of those HDR textured images!

Hi Ben – I ll see if I can get Robin to show off some of the spheron results on here ... meantime I can certainly say that the spheron complements a laser very well – as it scans around the ‘absolute’ nodal point like the laser head - producing really accurate hdr imagery - so there’s never any parallax distortion issues which are typically associated with stitching solutions and other multi lens capture methods. – here’s a short PDF which illustrates it. http://bit.ly/1iSHq3j

Cheers
Pete
