3D scanning with on up and coming Projects

Post by Sean Varney »

Just to note that 3d scanning has never been used so much with in film/TV VFX
Here are a list of on going projects that I know have and are using 3d scanning for the VFX work

John Carter of Mars
Pirates of the Caribbean 4
BattleShip (this may be called warship/shaceship)
Gravity
Potter 7 (just out)
Potter 8 (next year)
Hobbit 1 and 2 (just starting)
Narnia 3

That's just the head liners
With the advent of new and faster 3d scanning systems the speed at which, actors, props and sets scan be scanned has improved greatly, fast PCs and better point data editing tools has meant faster turnaround times and so more and better scans for a project.

One more point as the a new group of scanning start ups have come on-line, companies with the experience and expertise to supply 3d data for VFX.

in short its never been so busy in the Industry.

Fun times

Great to see 7 of your list and 3 more I know about are all using Leica scanners for the set's. and a variety of short range scanners for the heads/bodies and props.

Sean

Some great films to be working on! Looking forward to John Carter of Mars. How is the scan data being used to help production? ( if thats not a trade secret)

Is it to help with continuity and camera matching? or even being used to help with lighting and pre-vis work?

The shows that I've worked on used it for camera tracking and to digitize set backdrops/props.

cool, anyone have a list of videogames using LS? I guess the last game of F1 used it to capture data from the race track. I remember the first time I saw something about laser scanner was for an F1 game (possibly Psygnosis/Sony for PSOne).

I scanned some millitary tanks for a ps2 game in 2004, think it was the first 'Mercinary' game.

I did some stuff on Potter 2 a long time ago which was to ensure a cgi basilisk ( I think!) did not interfere with the physical set of the chamber.
That was using a non-360 scanner which we are now all so used to using! Thank goodness for progress.

Was it a 2400 or 2500 Cyrax by any chance?

I learnt to scan with the 2400, that was a big heavy chunk of scanner to lug about, with its massive car battery to power it.

Correct Matt, It was indeed a Cyrax 2500 complete with a battery the size of a house and the insanely large box for it.
