Anyone here working on this? It was also featured at Gizmodo. I had to laugh because they talk about the Tron-age technology but then don't go on to explain how it works or how there are people who get to do this thing all the timeIt might look like something out of Tron, but you're actually looking at a 3D laser scan of the world's last surviving wooden whaling vessel, the Charles W. Morgan.
The ship, built in 1841, is being restored at a cost of $10 million and it's hoped that it will one day sail again.
X-rays are being used to identify weak spots in the ship's structure, and lasers to form a digital archive of precise measurements. The image above is a 3D laser scan of the entire ship's structure, which is being used for reference during the work.
It's hoped the ship will be fully restored and ready for the water by the end of 2012, although it is unlikely to resume whaling.

Re: Scan of the last wooden whaling ship
I think I already saw a post about this some time ago. It was scanned by Feldman Professional Land Surveyors.
Here is a link to information about the restoration and some images of the scanning being done.

It must of been a great ship at some time, shame about its use.

Hi,
The NYT article didn't turn out the best. I think trying to get their heads around x-ray imaging and 3D laser scanning resulted in a bit of muddle of an article. We've been through four phases of survey on the Morgan so far as the restoration and documentation process moves along.
There will be some more illuminating articles and a paper in the near future and please drop me a line if you'd like any more specific info
All the best
