Scanning of Shukhov radio tower in Moscow
Hi folks,
Modelling of the 150 m tower has been succesfully finished and editors of GIM International found the project interesting enough to kindly publish the article in the last issue. Have a look at pages 22-25.
Finally, I got my picture on the cover of the Rollin' Stone!
Seriously, I was really happy doing this job. I do love laser scanning!
...Wanna buy five copies for my mother...

Mikhail, this is amazing! 150 meters up with all that heavy equipment! It doesn't look like there are any elevators so, how did you manage to get it up there? Your team must have an abundance of courage.
Really nice work

Re: Scanning of Shukhov radio tower in Moscow
Thanks, Jonathan.
There is an elevator, that has been constructed some time after the tower in soviet times. And it is still works. It elevates up to 125 m height, and it is the last height when we used SS2. From 125 to 150 meters we used Focus3d. Climbing a ladder the very top of the tower I've tied the case with the scanner to myself. You know how much does it cost and I don't want to let him fly.
Really terrible

FARO, UK showcased this project a year or so ago, and it's one of my favorites, both for the striking images and for the tenacity to pull it off -Well done!

Thanks, Nikola
At this project we used Blender for a major part of work. It works not perfect with point clouds, but there was a lot of just modeling job, without point clouds. We used old drawings to model fasteners and small elements that could not be modeled by laser scanning data. After finishing this project we can say that Blender is a sowtaware, deserving attention. It works very good with huge amount of objects also, at the tower we have tens of thousands objects, it's a challange for 3d-software.
