Effect of laser exposure for parietal art

Post by B.Chazaly »

Hi all,

I've been asked today about the possible effects of laser beam on parietal painting : change in the pigmentation of paintings, influence of C14 datation.

I've answered that as long as Class I laser scanner are safety for the eyes, I didn't think there could be any problem with paintings. What about Class III ?

I'm now wondering if there isn't any papers about it.

Any ideas ?

Regards,

Bertrand.

Hi Bertrand.

In this respect, I guess is may not be the laser classification which plays a role. More probably the laser power and the speed of the scanner as both are influencing how much energy will hit an object.

To give you a reliable statement, you may better ask a musuem expert. But if I would imagine a typical lighting condition in a museum, I would expect that any halogene bulb would result in much higher energy exposure than a typical laser scanner. Even more if you compare the laser engery with the normal sun light.
