It's a common misconception that witch marks or hex foils were made by witches. They were actually made by people wishing to ward off evil (Apotropaic symbols). The symbols are often found in old churches where black magic or satanic rituals may have been practiced at night. People would scribe these wards into the stone to keep the witches away. It is more likely that the caves in Creswell were in fact a holy place.
