Revised Assailants Path Video

Post by ddustin »

I modified the video with the addition of 3D characters representing the locations of the suspect.
The video has sections sped up and slowed down as well as motion blur and frame blending added.

David,
I am very impressed with the quality of your video, the gal looks much better in your video than in the news images!
I am using 6.2 SCENE and the Video Pro app but the settings keep changing to Clearview from Supersample/gap filling settings I would much prefer. Apparently you are not having that issue in v 6.1.
I love how clean your trees appear. My trees always have a blueish white glow to them and I don't know why. Is there a filter I can use to make them look like yours David?

Here's what my trees look like now...

Paul,
I rendered my video in 6.2 and with the video Pro app.

Regarding your blue tinted trees..
The reason that happens are:
1. The wind is moving the leaves or needles on the trees. Therefore, they are in a different location when the laser captures them than when the camera does (you'll see the motion as a blur in grayscale). If possible, I avoid scans under trees as these are the worst. My trees look good because of their distance from the scanner, and because I'm using the blue sky with white clouds background, any blue tint is lost in the sky.
2. The laser has a beam diameter of approximately 2.4 mm, while the camera has much more area. If you open the color image and look at the trees, you'll see that the sky probably "blows out" a little (HDR helps to minimise this some).
3. There are ways to fix them. You can use Arena4D to recolor the tree portion of the point clouds.
4. You can export the color overlay (only .bmp) and edit the colors in photoshop to remove/recolor the bluish ting and re-apply them. The result is impressive. If you create a texture brush that has a mixture of leaves, needles and branches I would think that would be best. We obviously would only use this on civil cases or those involving visualizations.
5. Try not to use a black background. The stark contrast between the black background and light blue is always going to reveal any anomaly.
6. I applied motion blur and frame blending. This really helps things look nice (but is most evident in the faster motion segments).
Hope this helps

Thanks David,
I appreciate your help with this issue as it has been bothersome for quite a while. I had assumed it was due to movement in the leave tips which you point out too. I am a photographer too and have touched up the overlays, bringing up shadows and knocking down highlights and color correcting but I have not worked on the trees before. I will now!
Your background choice makes good color sense too.
Thanks again.

I guess this was done using one of the newer Faro scanners with HDR? I use one without HDR capabilities and it always overexposes the sky causing white tree tops.

David,
Ours was done using a regular X330, non-HDR unit.
We scanned at 1/4 Resolution, 3x quality, even weighted.
I take particular care to stay out from under trees just for this reason.
HDR is great for certain things, but performing long scans isn't one of them.

The only thing that would have helped would be having more than one scanner.
This agency only had one and I hadn't brought any of mine (of course I didn't plan on scanning this long of an area either).

Very much appreciate your willingness to share your techniques and what you've learned from so much experience. I also was struck by the nice appearance of your foliage. May I ask how high you positioned the scanner for the stations you used for this job?
