Another question I have that isn't related to the topic, but you seem to be the guy to ask Eugene. Are Infrared scanners like the Freestyle and Kinect just structured light systems that use IR light to avoid it being visible to the human eye?

For general mapping and lectures, a Kinect sensor will work fine and they are relatively cheap. You could also look to invest in the Artec software as it works with the Kinect sensors and is amazing software for refining meshes, texturing and such.

There is even a low cost motion capture system with the latest Xbox...look for Brekel Pro Body. It's a lot of fun for presentations and gets students involved.

Happy scanning!

Photogrammetry is definitely an awesome tool to document objects.
I've been playing around with it in my spare time as well the last couple of months and created some 3d models of various objects.
It's not all shot by myself, I've downloaded drone flight movies from Youtube, extracted some frames and used those to triangulate the models of the temples.
I used a Canon EOS 450D and my Oneplus 2.

Check out some of the results:

Basically, yes. I usually subdivide structured light into fringe pattern and structured dots. Kinect and Freestyle are structured dots.

Long time without reply, thanks Eugene, the photogrammetry prints came out beautifully, far better than the Faro Freestyle or Kinect scanner did (to be expected). But I was surprised at the quality of the kinect scanner, and a bit disappointed by the Freestyle (both in usability and final product). Bonus photo of crime scene created with minimal photos given limited time on scene.

Simon,
I'm curious about the blue scale-rule in your photos -does it have a name?

Hi Scott, I believe it is this one
http://www.safariland.com/products/fore ... ml#start=4

It's also not actually blue, just looks that way in the screenshots. The reverse side is inverted colours, white lines on black.
