Aircraft Laser Scanning Methods Presentation

Post by dirdim »

We just uploaded a PowerPoint presentation called: 3D Scanning Methods & Equipment for Reverse Engineering Airplane OMLs.

It is about laser scanning aircraft exterior OMLs (Outer Mold Lines) for reverse engineering into high quality CAD models. The presentation is essentially an historical perspective of the evolution of 3D scanning technology and methods for performing these types of projects from the mid-1990's thru today.

The information is presented in the form of short case studies with some textual information but mostly with pictures of the scanning process as well as the modeling results. It is very interesting to see the change in the technology over time.

The PowerPoint was recently presented at SME's Aerospace Measurement, Inspection & Analysis Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, USA on September 30, 2009.

If anyone has any questions or comments, don't hesitate to post or email me directly.

Thanks for the feedback. We use a LOT of 3D tools but so far no Leica, Hexagon, Metris, or some others. Believe me, we've tested most of them or are at least very aware of their capabilities and limitations. We spend a lot of time testing out new technology, even stuff that's not available commercially yet. We've done 1000's of projects so we know what works and when we see new solutions, we know where and when to use them.

Meanwhile, I am happy to provide as much advise as I can.
