3D Point Clouds to 2D Drawings

Post by limdaohe »

Hi folks,

Hope you guys out here could share more about your experience/recommendations with me.
Apologies as I am a inexperienced user here.

Scanner used: Topcon GLS-2000 3D laser scanner.
Deliverables: 3D point clouds to 2D Building outline drawing

Currently our workflow is as such:
Topcon GLS-2000 Scan - Topcon ScanMaster (Occ/Bs Registration) - Autodesk Recap (Slicing, Section Creation, etc) - AutoCAD 2015
However as I am aware they are several limitations in importing point clouds into AutoCAD in terms of functionalities?

Currently my end-user is using AutoCAD, and there are no function to automatically (even with AutoCAD 2016) to automatically join up lines with reference to elevation accurately.
Any advise of a more suitable software (if, any) for above application?

Hi Daryl, welcome to the forum

I would definitely recommend having a look at Undet - their CAD plug-in for AutoCAD is an extremely efficient method of handling point clouds natively in AutoCAD to produce 2D plans elevations and sections. We switched from Pointools a year ago an haven't looked back.

Thanks, we tried but as our end-users are die hard AutoCAD users, they are quite reluctant to change platforms unless really necessary.

Still Revit is the best choice even for 2D Drawings.
You can export 2D floor plans ,elevations, section from it

Yes I agree while we try to keep the work flow within AutoCAD as requested by my client.
Trainers from Autodesk has advised me as well on this.

However, just for curiosity, with Revit, we still have to manually define 2 points to coming up with lines? Am I correct to say so?

If you go the Rhino road there also is an excellent Arena4d plugin, free to try.
