Hi William,

There are a handful of tools out there to extract features from roadway, but I don't know of any for AutoCAD 2009. Maybe somebody else will have more information for you. My personal favorite is Bentley Descartes. The 3D line following tool can semi automatically create lines for the road stripping. It uses the intensity contrast between the pavement and stripes with some hints from you to find and extract them. We have used it on many projects and once you set it up right it works like magic. You have to get it started on each line, but then it anticipates and automatically extracts the rest of the line! To make the tool work properly with terrestrial scans I have found that it helps to homogenize the density of the point cloud through spatial filters.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks a lot for your time!
Willie,

There are lots of ways to do this in Cyclone and/or CloudWorx. One of the simplest approaches is to either draw polylines in Cyclone and export as DXF or draw line/polylines in AutoCAD using CloudWorx. If my post works correctly, here is a movie that David Langley made for us (thanks Dave), that shows both methods.

If you do the process in Cyclone you can customize shortcuts so you dont have to use the drop downs all the time as well. We use CloudWorx and fly thru striping. Cyclone II Topo is also a Leica product that can find striping as well I believe.

William,

I don't think those joints would be a problem for the 3D line follow tool. You just need to tweak the high/low intensity setting. If all else fails and the joints are fairly straight you could always just draw a straight line above them then use the "drape line" tool, but I would try the 3D line follow first.

Hi William,

Pre scanning days, we always produced RTC scenes as 2D plans for Courts, Coroner and the like.
This has been great for the past decade or so but in the past 2 years we were introduced to laser scanning.
3D point clouds are extremely useful, detailed and I don't mind saying some are beautiful to look at.

However, the outside world hasn't caught up to the progress we've made and time and time again we get ' can I have a plan please' :?

I use LSS Elite and Bentley Powerdraft with our Topcon kit and Cyclone with the C10.

I don't have access to any 'automatic' processes......

The quickest way for me to convert scan data to a line plan is to use Cyclone.

I open the layers box, create a new layer calling it 'kerb' or similar, set as current, give it a colour.
Return to the screen and using 'multi-pick' tool, select my kerb or whatever.
Hit ctrl+P.
Repeat this time add another new layer, label it accordingly etc and set that as current and repeat the process until youre finished.

When your done return to the layers dialogue box and turn off everything apart from your newly created layers.
At this point I turn the cloud on and off...checking I've got all the bits I need.

Export as dxf and import into your cad package...as I said for me that's LSS or Bentley, where I apply my own line Legend.

Sounds long winded but it is really quick in practice.

I do have this as a PDF document with screen grabs that I can forward if interested.

Hi William,
We use TOPODOT, the best thing I have ever seen for point cloud to CAD, great for road makings. You can get a 30 day trial and the guys at Certainty 3D will get you up and running, one to one tuition you won't regret it.

Hi Colin,
Can you share that PDF with me, I am working on a project and this is exactly what I need. Thanks
