Hi everyone,
I have received a point cloud of a bodywork which I need to do some modeling on but I have noticed an issue with some parts of the point cloud - significant missalignment which can be seen on the attached image. It looks like several patched which are shifted from the majority of the point cloud. Unfortunately the point cloud is one file only and I can't get the single files in order to perform a new registration so I am looking on the way of removing these patches. Because the surface is curved in various directions which makes the manual cleaning slow, I would like to ask if there exists any software tool which can assist with this cleaning.
Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Hi Lukas,
Although not an expert, I would try to take this point cloud into GeoMagic Design X and try performing the function Align between Scan Data under the Tools Menu. I don't know if it will work for a single combined point cloud as I have only used it on data broken down into frames.
In addition there are other cleaning tools which you can use although I am not sure that this misalignment is only in the area which you marked, and may have affected another area in your model.

Hi Roee,
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, the function Align between Scan Data works for two or more different scan data sets only. Because the misalignment is in several areas and the point cloud on this misaligned patches is quite dense, the filtering tools don't help to much.
I think that I have to go step by step with a function Separate Point Cloud in order to create new point cloud data sets from the misaligned patches and re-register them again.

There are various software that can be used to clean the data - Cloud Compare (Free), Leica Cyclone, Autodesk ReCap, to name a few.
I would suggest that going back to the source of the laser scan and finding out why the errors are there is a better option though.

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

I second Matt. You've been delivered shonky data, so the first step is to tell the provider there is an issue and get them to sort it.
